If you haven't already fallen in love with the internationally acclaimed M.C. Beaton, then this audiobook filled with her trademark wry wit and a wonderfully puzzling plot will do the trick.
When Hamish Macbeth - Lochdubh's one-man police force - awakens one morning with a killer toothache, the only dentist who will see him immediately is Dr. Gilchrist. The dentist is infamous for some unsavory womanizing and his use of "The Great Australian Trench", a practiced slip of the drill that mars several teeth and ensures a return customer.
Unfortunately for Hamish, and Gilchrist, someone has canceled all the doctor's appointments - permanently. A toothache can drive a man mad, and Hamish, with a mouth full of throbbing pain, decides to go after the killer alone.

Death of a Dentist (Audible Audio Edition) M C Beaton Davina Porter Recorded Books Books Reviews
Another winner. I , so far feel every book is a five. I'm going to keep looking! I am so enjoying this series. Hamish is not lazy. He just conserves his energy!
I will never tire of Hamish Macbeth and his beautiful village of Locdubh. Death of a Dentist has all the regular cast of characters plus a few new ones, some nice and some not so nice. Treat yourself and settle with a cup of tea and this Scottish cozy for a good winter weekend.
I am a diehard fan of Hamish the policeman. Characters are as developed as they need to be. Many of them are familiar people from other books in the series. The author is always careful to link them to Hamish's past adventures. This is truly fun to read and Hamish and his friends are comfortable to know. I look forward to new books in this series.
This was my first Macbeth novel. I saw two episodes of the BBC show but found the accent hard to understand. This book I enjoyed completely. Hamish is a nicely rounded character, less predictable than many of MC Beaton' s other characters, which I still enjoy. I also enjoyed the completely foreign-to-me idea that all a dentist does is fill and extract teeth. Also foreign is the notion of ignoring teeth until they hurt. These ideas underscored the wildness of the Highlands. One might as well be back in
the 18th century.
Again by the time I began to get a hint of who the guilty party was the book was almost at an end. And, it was just one sentence by one person that alerted me so that made if fun for me as I waited for Hamish to "remember" the same thing. This series gets better and better and I'm very glad that I have all of them sitting on a shelf waiting to be enjoyed.
Another good one by M C Beaton. I have read 10 of the Hamish Macbeth series, all have been good but I think this one might be one of the best. As usual Hamish is caught in the middle of a murder and then guess what---a second murder-----guess who finds both bodies? Beaton has provided plenty of good characters to go with Hamish and it make for a good light read. It won't scare you to death or cause you do loose sleep from fright but it is good. Hamish has to fight the bad Inspector Blair as always. I liked the part of the Smiley Bros. Could they make moonshine and be killers too???? How about Kylie, pretty but has bad, bad boy friends. A surprise in the end, many twist and turns. Priscilla finally shows up again, will they get back together???? Beaton leaves enough to let you know they will be more forth coming.
Last year I ventured out of Massachusetts to ride the train with a good Scottish friend all the way up to Wick and Thurso in Scotland; bout the last part of the UK I had not visited by rail. On that ride and on the bus that replaced our broken down train on the way back down to Inverness we passed through Sutherland County. As I looked out our windows I couldn't help wonder what it would be like to live in one of the many beautiful croft cottages and villages through which we passed. All looked so peaceful and, given the brilliant weather, bucolic.
Well, forget that bucolic stuff. Though our hero Hamish Macbeth, a local Sutherland police officer, choses to live in a small village, in part to avoid a smothering police bureaucracy in the larger towns, Beaton's view of life there is enough to keep me in New England, sitting cozily by my fire gobbling up these novels for the rest of the winter.
LOL, what fun. Who killed a local dentist best known for yanking out teeth and somewhat lecherous behavior? To get this one solved Macbeth works his way through a local soothsayer, the gruesome brothers who run a huge still (claiming a Highlander right), gossip mongering old ladies, and more than a sexpot or two. With a little help from his friends, including a beautiful computer hacker who's a classic love 'em and leave 'em temptress, our boy outwits the profane Glasgow-born inspector Blair (a staple in this series),who treats him like sheep dip, and helps solve another crime along the way.
Combine this with Ian Rankin's Edinburgh and tis a grim and foreboding Scotland that lies behind bucolic castles, villages, and lassies. For the tourist amongst us there is order, beauty, and history to be enjoyed, but if you wonder why Scots seldom smile at strangers just read this one!
